Green Computing

Green computing can be defined as the study of designing, engineering, manufacturing, using and disposing of computing devices. Computing has also established its share to contribute by saving the environment under the concept called green computing. It appears in a large number of aspects which includes recycling, energy-efficient devices, eco-friendly vehicles, green buildings etc.

Purpose of Green computing

The main aim of green computing is to attain economic viability and improve the way of computing devices which are being used. It includes the development of environmentally sustainable production practices and improved disposal and recycling procedures.

Goals of Green computing

All these above goals are similar to green chemistry. The concept of green computing is more critical as we move towards cities. The term green computing came into existence in the year 1992. It was named as Energy Star. This energy star was used in all the electronic products such as printers, television and refrigerators.

Types of green computing systems

Solar power system:

In this type, we utilize the sunlight and produce solar power for our own personal and commercial use. Canada, Spain and California are the countries who implemented this technology and stands first by doing a great achievement. Solar panel converts electricity power into electrical energy.

Wind turbine program:

With the help of this program, anybody can generate electricity. We require a huge amount to set up a wind turbine. It decreases carbon dioxide emissions.

Geothermal Power:

This is an exclusive type of green computing. We can generate electricity with the help of a geothermal plant. We can utilize this power for daily usage such as heating and cooling.

Approaches to Green Computing :

Abstract the computer resources for example, connecting one printer with all computers. If we use a common server and connect all the terminals, we can save the power upto 80%. Green computing technology improves the efficiency of personal computers used by an individual.

Strategies

Green computing has decreased the consumption of overhead energy, maximizing the server usage through a strategy including server virtualization. But technologies like data analytics, artificial intelligence can reduce the progress in green computing strategies

Advantages of Green computing

Conservation of resources means less energy is required to produce, use and dispose of products. It reduces the existing exposure in all the electronic devices. It encourages reuse and recyclability. Sustainable computing means reduced energy consumption. It helps in the preservation and effective utilization of natural resources.

Disadvantages of Green computing

It is quite expensive. Frequent change in technology. It can cause more burden to an individual. Only fewer courses and publications are available for green computing.

Conclusion:

Various IT industries and organizations in the world started adopting green computing practices and it has become the main part of their day-to-day activities. Now it’s our duty to understand the importance of green computing and work collaboratively together for a healthier and a greener environment for our future generations. By adopting the practices, we can get an eco-friendly environment along with our benefits such as energy conservation and waste minimization.
